eSoft was founded by Philip L. Becker with an initial focus on developing and selling the TBBS bulletin board system for IBM-PC computers. Before the Internet became widespread, companies like Microsoft and other software providers relied on TBBS for their online support needs. As the Internet grew in prominence, eSoft introduced the IPAD (Internet Protocol Adapter) to stay ahead of the curve. Initially, the IPAD acted as a gateway to TBBS using protocols like FTP and DNS but eventually evolved into an all-in-one “Internet in a box” solution, enabling ISPs and businesses to establish a point of presence on the Internet with a single appliance. To support eSoft’s growth and strategic pivot, Bolder facilitated its IPO, successfully raising over $25 million.
